At first the billiard balls were made of ivory, but today are made with phenolics resins, which have a number of advantages over natural:
* Do not get dirty as fast as natural.
* Easily cleaned without fading balls
* Allows for better modeling thus get a perfect spherical shape of the billiard balls.
* Weigh the same as natural.
* It avoids the trade in elephant tusks.
* They are cheaper.
* They last longer.
